Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece, the second highest mountain range of Balkans, the holy mountain, a landmark of Greek Mythology, the residence of the twelve Gods of Antiquity, a National Forest since 1938, but also universal monument of culture.
It overlooks imposing and sumptuous in Central Greece with a range of high summits, sluices and sills, canyons and plateaus, alpine grasslands, bushy forests, deep caves and imposing rocks. It is a unique ecosystem of rare biodiversity that hosts more than 1.500 species of plants, tens (decades) of wild animal species, as well as rare birds.
Mytikas (2.917 m.) and Stefani or throne of Zeus (2.909 m.) are its cloud covered summits. Here, within dense clouds, the “Twelve Gods of Olympus” lived according to the religion of ancient Greeks. The Pantheon (called today Μytikas), is their meeting point, a theater of their turbulent discussions. The throne of Zeus (called today Stefani), exclusively hosts to the king of gods, Zeus. From there he launches his bolts showing this way his divine anger.
The mountain of Gods with its impressive height, its mythical appeal and the easy accessibility, constitutes an attraction for thousands of visitors from any corner of the world. Roads and paths cross the massif with the European Path E4 being the most important one, moving westwards from Litochoro to the peaks, through the Enipeas gorge.

The twelve gods live in the gorges, in the “folds of Olympus” as Homer calls them – where their palaces are located. The Dodecatheon is completed by Hera, Hestia, Demeter, Poseidon, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Ares, Aphrodite and Hephaestus.
On the eastern slopes of Olympus, in Pieria, the mythological traditions placed the nine Muses, protectors of Fine Arts, daughters of Zeus and the titan Mnemosyne: Clio, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Erato, Polyhymnia, Urania, and Calliope.
Pierias’ beaches is a our base, we start early in the morning the cycling daily excursion of 86 kilometres to get to know the feet of Olympus and its mountain villages. We head to Litochoro, Leptokarya, Platamonas, and from there we start climbing for Kallipefki. In between, we pass the picturesque mountain village of Palios Panteleimonas, making a short stop for rest to admire the wonderful view to the feet of Olympus and the sea spreading before us!
We continue climbing leaving behind the mountainous Ano Skotina. Next stop to regroup and take photographs is the position Patomeni, some 2 kilometres from Kallipefki of Thessalian Olympus. We continue our way moving to the country road of Larissa to Kalipefki passing some kilometres outside the village of Karya. We take the downhill road of some 25 kilometres for Leptokarya. The ride of 86 kilometres is concluded at the initial point.
The excursion is concluded with commemorative photos and greetings. at Litochoro. If you like we enjoy a meal at a traditional greek taverna.
