About this activity

Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece, the second highest mountain range of Balkans, the holy mountain, a landmark of Greek Mythology, the residence of the twelve Gods of Antiquity, a National Forest since 1938, but also universal monument of culture.

It overlooks imposing and sumptuous in Central Greece with a range of high summits, sluices and sills, canyons and plateaus, alpine grasslands, bushy forests, deep caves and imposing rocks. It is a unique ecosystem of rare biodiversity that hosts more than 1.500 species of plants, tens (decades) of wild animal species, as well as rare birds.

Mytikas (2.917 m.) and Stefani or throne of Zeus (2.909 m.) are its cloud covered summits. Here, within dense clouds, the “Twelve Gods of Olympus” lived according to the religion of ancient Greeks. The Pantheon (called today Μytikas), is their meeting point, a theater of their turbulent discussions. The throne of Zeus (called today Stefani), exclusively hosts to the king of gods, Zeus. From there he launches his bolts showing this way his divine anger.

The mountain of Gods with its impressive height, its mythical appeal and the easy accessibility, constitutes an attraction for thousands of visitors from any corner of the world. Roads and paths cross the massif with the European Path E4 being the most important one, moving westwards from Litochoro to the peaks, through the Enipeas gorge.

The charm of Olympus is so imposing that leads you to discover in yourself the soul of a legendary conqueror!

The organized refuges host thousands of visitors:

  • Refuge “Spilios Agapitos”
  • Refuge S.E.O. “Yossos Apostolidis”
  • Refuge “Christos Kakkalos”
  • Refuge Petrostrouga
  • Refuge “Vrysopoules” or “K.E.O.A.H.”
  • Refuge in the area “Koromilies” of Leptokarya
  • Refuge in the area “Krevatia” of Vrontou
  • Refuge “Stavros” or “Dimitrios Mpountolas”
  • Refuge in the area “Koromilia” of Dion

  • Refuge “Ano Pigadi”
  • Refuge “Kostas Migotsidis”
  • Refuge “Agios Antonios”
  • Refuge “I Kalyva tou Christaki”
  • Refuge “Livadaki”
  • Emergency refuge “Salatoura”

The twelve gods live in the gorges, in the “folds of Olympus” as Homer calls them – where their palaces are located. The Pantheon (called today Μytikas), is their meeting point, a theater of their turbulent discussions. The throne of Zeus (called today Stefani), exclusively hosts to the king of gods, Zeus. The Dodecatheon is completed by Hera, Hestia, Demeter, Poseidon, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Ares, Aphrodite and Hephaestus.

On the eastern slopes of Olympus, in Pieria, the mythological traditions placed the nine Muses, protectors of Fine Arts, daughters of Zeus and the titan Mnemosyne: Clio, Euterpe, Thalia, Melpomene, Terpsichore, Erato, Polyhymnia, Urania, and Calliope.
